Sony Pictures has officially dated Ramayana, Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious adaptation of the ancient Indian epic, for November 6, 2026. The film is expected to receive a multilingual theatrical release, expanding the story of Prince Rama, Sita and the demon king Ravana to audiences across several international markets.
The release date was reported by The Hollywood Reporter on September 2. Sony holds the film’s worldwide distribution rights outside India, while Prime Focus Studios, which also produced the project, will oversee its Indian theatrical release.
Ranbir Kapoor Leads Nitesh Tiwari’s Epic
Ramayana is directed by Nitesh Tiwari, with Ranbir Kapoor playing Rama, Sai Pallavi portraying Sita and Yash taking on the role of Ravana. The film is based on one of India’s most influential literary and cultural epics, following Rama’s exile and the events surrounding Sita’s abduction by Ravana.
The production brings together major international and Indian talent. Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman are providing the music, while renowned action specialists Terry Notary and Guy Norris are handling the choreography.
Production design comes from Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal, while Prime Focus Studios founder Namit Malhotra serves as producer. Malhotra also has extensive experience in visual effects through DNEG, whose credits include Dune, Interstellar, Tenet and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
Malhotra previously said the filmmakers wanted to preserve the story’s cultural significance while delivering a large-scale cinematic experience. “Our ambition has always been to honor that legacy while creating a cinematic experience worthy of audiences everywhere,” he said in a July statement.
The November release also places Ramayana in theaters following the success of The Odyssey, another major cinematic adaptation of an ancient epic. Nolan’s film has surpassed $1.55 billion worldwide, setting a strong precedent for large-scale mythology-driven filmmaking at the global box office.
