The Obsession actress is developing her interpretation of Rogue, including the mutant's distinctive Southern accent.

Inde Navarrette has given Marvel fans an early glimpse of how she plans to portray Rogue in the upcoming X-Men movie, teasing the character’s distinctive Southern accent and iconic catchphrase. The actress acknowledged that she still has work to do before bringing the popular mutant to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but expressed enthusiasm about developing her interpretation of the character.

During a red-carpet interview with Canadian entertainment program Etalk, Navarrette was asked to demonstrate Rogue’s famous “Sugar!” line. The actress responded playfully, admitting she had not practiced extensively before offering her version of the catchphrase.

“Oh! You know what? God bless me, I haven’t done a lot of practice,”

Navarrette said. She then delivered the line before adding,

“But I think that, you know, I’m gonna work on it, if you don’t like it, and I’m gonna figure out and talk to the Marvel team on what we wanna do.”

The exchange, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, offers an early indication of how the actress is approaching the role.

How Navarrette Plans to Approach Rogue

Rogue, whose real name is Anna Marie, comes from Mississippi in Marvel Comics. Her signature Southern drawl is a recognizable part of her characterization, alongside her dangerous mutant ability to absorb another person’s powers, memories and life force through physical contact. These abilities have made close relationships particularly complicated for the character.

According to Marvel’s official character profile, her powers and background are central to her identity. Navarrette’s accent preparation will therefore be an important part of making her version recognizable while allowing her to bring something new to the role.

The actress has previously discussed wanting to respect the character’s history while developing her own interpretation. Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter podcast, she described the role as an opportunity to explore a different persona.

“I also recognize that with acting comes the freedom of being a completely different person, one of those people being Rogue, Anna Marie,”

Navarrette explained. She added that she wanted to pay respect to Marvel’s writers, work with director Jake Schreier and bring her own personality to the character.

Her comments suggest that the accent will develop through preparation and collaboration rather than being finalized by this early preview.

Navarrette will lead the new generation of mutants alongside Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Maya Boyd as Storm, Asa Germann as Angel and Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister.

Marvel revealed key cast members during its Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23 in August 2026. The film will be directed by Jake Schreier and is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028, according to ABC News’ coverage of the announcement.

Navarrette’s brief “Sugar!” preview is not a finished portrayal, but it gives fans an early glimpse of the direction she is exploring for Rogue. Her performance will ultimately reveal how the reboot balances the character’s familiar comic-book traits with a fresh live-action interpretation.
