Insidious: Out of the Further has begun its theatrical run with $3 million in Thursday night previews, giving Sony Pictures and the long-running horror franchise an encouraging start heading into its opening weekend.
The sixth Insidious movie is projected to earn around $23 million during its domestic opening weekend. The film is playing in roughly 2,700 North American theaters as it faces major competition from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is expected to remain a dominant force in its fourth weekend.
How the New Insidious Movie Is Performing
Directed by Jacob Chase, Insidious: Out of the Further introduces a new central story while bringing back franchise favorite Lin Shaye as paranormal investigator Elise Rainier. Amelia Eve plays Gemma, a young mother who discovers she can travel into the mysterious spirit realm known as the Further.
However, Gemma’s ability comes with a dangerous twist. She can bring entities from the Further into the real world, turning her unusual power into a threat that could unleash supernatural horrors outside the spirit realm.
The film also stars Brandon Perea and has an estimated $18 million production budget. Sony describes the new installment as an expansion of the Insidious mythology, with the Further becoming more dangerous than ever before. Sony Pictures

The $3 million preview result falls below the $5 million earned by Insidious: The Red Door in previews. That 2023 installment went on to open with $33 million domestically and eventually earned $189 million worldwide. The new film’s projected $23 million opening would therefore represent a smaller start, although its relatively modest budget could still make the film profitable.
Spider-Man and Jason Statham Bring Major Competition
Insidious: Out of the Further is not the only major new release entering theaters. Jason Statham’s action thriller Mutiny also opened this weekend, earning $700,000 in Thursday previews and targeting an opening in the high single-digit millions.
The biggest challenge, however, remains Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The superhero blockbuster is expected to win the domestic box office again in its fourth weekend, continuing an exceptionally strong theatrical run.
Despite the crowded marketplace, horror franchises have historically performed well against bigger blockbusters due to their loyal audiences and relatively low production costs. The coming weekend will show whether Insidious: Out of the Further can build enough momentum to deliver another profitable chapter for the long-running supernatural series.
