Dave Bautista is officially stepping into one of gaming’s most recognizable roles. The actor and former WWE star has closed a deal to play Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action God of War series, replacing Ryan Hurst, who was forced to leave the project following a serious on-set injury.

The casting update was first reported by Deadline, which revealed that Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television began discussions with Bautista shortly after deciding to recast the lead role. The move represents a major production reset for one of Prime Video’s most ambitious upcoming adaptations.

Ryan Hurst’s Injury Forces a Major Production Restart

Hurst had already begun filming as Kratos in Vancouver when he reportedly tore his bicep while performing a stunt in late June. The injury occurred around four months into production and required the studios to find a replacement for the physically demanding role.

the series will now start again from scratch, with none of the footage from the original shoot being used. Preparation is scheduled to begin this month before production resumes in Vancouver in mid-October.

Frederick E.O. Toye, whose credits include Shōgun, The Boys and Fallout, will return to direct the first two episodes. He had also directed the opening episodes featuring Hurst before the production was forced to reset.

Bautista brings extensive physical and action experience to the role after years as a professional wrestler and a major Hollywood career that includes Guardians of the Galaxy, Dune and Blade Runner 2049. He had also recently undergone physical preparation for the upcoming Highlander movie, making him well-positioned for the demanding transformation required to play Kratos.

The Amazon series will adapt the Norse era of the God of War franchise and focus on Kratos’ relationship with his young son, Atreus. The pair venture on a dangerous journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mother.

As Amazon explained when announcing the adaptation, Kratos tries

“to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

Amazon MGM Studios has also confirmed that the series received a two-season order, with Ronald D. Moore serving as writer, executive producer and showrunner.

God of War Cast and Production Plans

Bautista joins Callum Vinson, who remains attached to play Atreus, alongside Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor. The cast also includes Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn as Brok, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Sonya Walger as Freya.

The two seasons are still expected to film back-to-back despite the recasting. The series is being co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios alongside PlayStation Productions and Ronald D. Moore’s Tall Ship Productions.

With filming restarting and Bautista taking over as Kratos, the live-action adaptation now enters a crucial new phase. The recasting may have delayed the project, but it has also given Prime Video a chance to rebuild its flagship PlayStation adaptation around an actor whose physical presence and action background make him a notable choice for the God of War.
