Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Little House on the Prairie is bringing renewed attention to a largely overlooked historical figure, and according to Jocko Sims, the story is long overdue. The actor, who portrays Dr. George Tann in the series, says the real-life physician’s legacy goes far beyond his brief appearance in Little House on the Prairie.
Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sims emphasized the depth of the character he’s portraying and the real history behind it. “He was adored,” Sims said, reflecting on Dr. Tann’s impact. “He was immersed in Native American cultures, speaking different languages while taking care of people.”
A Real Story Finally Taking Center Stage
In Laura Ingalls Wilder’s original work, Dr. George Tann appears only briefly, despite playing a crucial role in saving the Ingalls family during a malaria outbreak in the 1870s. Netflix’s adaptation changes that by making him a central figure throughout the first season.
This expanded role is rooted in real history. Dr. Tann, a Black practitioner of eclectic medicine, treated patients across racial and cultural lines in post-Civil War America. Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine described him as a “connector of different communities,” highlighting his importance in a time when America was still redefining itself.
Sonnenshine told The Hollywood Reporter that the series aims to reflect a more accurate version of history.
“People now say that that couldn’t be, but it was true,”
she explained, pointing to the diverse communities Tann served, including white settlers, Black residents, and Native American tribes.
For Sims, portraying Dr. Tann required more than just performance—it meant understanding the historical context of the late 1800s. The actor revealed that he turned to historical texts, including writings by Frederick Douglass, to better grasp the mindset of a Black doctor steering post-Civil War America.
“He seemed like a nice guy, and I pictured him smiling a lot,”
Sims said in the same interview. However, he also wanted to capture the complexity of the character, adding nuance shaped by both hardship and resilience.
Sims also incorporated elements of his own background into the role.
“The Black community, we’re not a monolith, and I definitely wanted to apply that idea to Dr. Tann,”
he said, underscoring the importance of authentic representation.
Why Dr. Tann’s Story Matters Today
The renewed focus on Dr. Tann comes at a time when conversations around representation and historical accuracy are gaining momentum. Sims acknowledged that the show may face criticism but stood firm on its foundation in real events.
“We’ll get some hate, people calling it woke,”
he said.
“But that’s not even what this is. This is just telling true stories.”
His comments highlight a broader theme behind the adaptation: reclaiming narratives that have been overlooked or simplified over time. Historically, Dr. Tann’s contributions were minimized in both literature and earlier screen adaptations, making this portrayal a significant shift.
The actor also pointed to the real-world impact of representation, noting how his previous roles as a doctor influenced viewers. He recalled audiences reaching out to say they were inspired to pursue careers in medicine, a response he hopes to see again with this project.
