Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt (Jagten) is widely regarded as one of the most powerful psychological dramas of the 21st century. Although Lucas is eventually cleared of all allegations, the film refuses to deliver a conventional happy ending. The Meaning Behind the Final Shot

Even Klara, whose false accusation started the tragedy, shares a brief, peaceful interaction with him, suggesting that the town is beginning to move forward.
However, during the final hunting expedition, a rifle shot narrowly misses Lucas. He turns toward the trees and briefly sees an unidentified figure aiming another shot before disappearing. The film never reveals the shooter’s identity, and director Thomas Vinterberg intentionally leaves the moment open to interpretation.
The ambiguity is the point. Rather than identifying a specific character, the unseen shooter symbolizes the permanent stain left by the accusation. Even though Lucas has been legally cleared and many people have accepted his innocence, someone in the community still views him with suspicion—or at the very least, he can never be certain that everyone believes the truth. The false allegation has permanently changed how others see him.
The ending also suggests that Lucas himself will never fully escape the psychological trauma of what happened. Whether the shooter intended to kill him or simply frighten him is ultimately irrelevant. Instead of providing closure, The Hunt delivers a sobering message about how quickly fear and misinformation can spread. While Lucas survives and the legal case ends, the emotional damage remains.
