The question of whether Beck cheated on Joe in You becomes increasingly important during the first season of the Netflix thriller. At first, Joe becomes convinced that Beck is having an affair with her therapist, Dr. Nicky, after noticing suspicious messages from a contact saved as “Fox.” His suspicions are not entirely baseless, but Joe’s obsession makes it difficult to separate genuine concerns from his paranoia and controlling behavior.
After their breakup, Beck and Joe eventually reconnect, and their relationship appears to have been repaired. However, Joe later discovers that Beck had actually been hiding something from him. She had been involved with Dr. Nicky while she was in a relationship with Joe, confirming that his suspicion about the therapist was correct. The revelation adds another layer to a relationship already built on secrecy, manipulation and betrayal.
How Beck Cheated on Joe and What Happened Between Them
Beck’s relationship with Dr. Nicky develops while she is dealing with the emotional aftermath of Peach Salinger’s death. She begins therapy with him, and Joe eventually becomes suspicious because Beck receives messages from “Fox,” which he initially believes are connected to an affair. Joe’s obsession leads him to spy on Beck and investigate Dr. Nicky, but he initially fails to find evidence that they are sleeping together.
Joe and Beck eventually break up after his jealousy and controlling behavior become too much for her. During their time apart, Joe starts dating Karen, while Beck continues working on herself and her writing. The two eventually reconnect, however, and Joe leaves Karen to resume his relationship with Beck.
After getting back together, Joe again becomes suspicious of Beck’s relationship with Dr. Nicky. This time, his investigation confirms that Beck had been intimate with her therapist, meaning she did cheat on Joe. Beck admits what happened and tells Joe that she loves him, and he chooses to forgive her rather than end their relationship permanently.
However, Beck’s betrayal is ultimately overshadowed by Joe’s far more serious crimes. She discovers the box containing evidence of his stalking and murders, confronts him and becomes trapped in his bookshop basement. Her attempt to escape fails, and Joe kills her before later framing Dr. Nicky for the crimes.
