To You in the Beyond is an upcoming Japanese anime film based on Akiko Abe’s award-winning novel Doko Yori mo Tooi Basho ni Iru Kimi e. The story follows Kazuki Tsukigase, a high school student who transfers to a school on the remote Tokishima Island because he wants to leave his past behind. His quiet new life changes when he visits a mysterious place called the Cove of Spiriting Away, where he discovers an unconscious girl named Nanao.
After she wakes up, Nanao cannot explain where she came from or why she was found there, except for repeatedly mentioning the year 1974. This central mystery turns the film into more than a straightforward romance, as Kazuki tries to understand Nanao’s identity and connection to the island. The story explores memory, first love, regret, and the emotional distance created by time.
What Is To You in the Beyond About?
Kazuki arrives on Tokishima hoping to escape people who know about his past, but the island quickly gives him another mystery to deal with. The Cove of Spiriting Away is surrounded by rumors that people can mysteriously disappear there, making Nanao’s sudden appearance even more unusual. Her claim that she is connected to 1974 becomes the key question driving Kazuki’s investigation.
Nanao is 16 years old and initially has little information about herself beyond her name and the strange year she remembers. As Kazuki becomes involved in her situation, their relationship develops into the emotional center of the story. The film uses their connection to explore how affection and memories can survive even when circumstances separate people by decades.
The To You in the Beyond anime film is directed by Junichi Wada, with a screenplay by Sayaka Kuwamura and character designs by Hechima. TMS Entertainment is handling animation production, while the Japanese theatrical release is scheduled for October 9, 2026. The main cast includes Hiiro Ishibashi as Kazuki and Anna Nagase as Nanao, with additional roles voiced by Shimba Tsuchiya and Hiroshi Tamaki.
Because the movie has not yet received its Japanese theatrical release, its complete ending and final answers surrounding Nanao’s identity are not yet publicly established. What is clear from the released material is that the mystery of 1974, the island’s strange cove, and Kazuki and Nanao’s relationship will drive the film toward its central emotional revelation.
