Hollywood’s box office recovery continues to gain momentum as Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office. The latest Marvel blockbuster from Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios becomes the fourth film of 2026 to reach the milestone, highlighting a strong year for theatrical releases after several years of post-pandemic recovery.

According to CNBC, Spider-Man: Brand New Day joins Universal’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Lionsgate’s Michael, and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 5 in the exclusive billion-dollar club.

The achievement marks the highest number of billion-dollar films released in a single year since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted movie production and theater attendance. Analysts believe the momentum could continue as several major releases remain in theaters.

Four studios share billion-dollar success in 2026

Unlike 2019, when Disney dominated the global box office, this year’s biggest hits are spread across multiple studios. Sony, Universal, Lionsgate, and Disney have each delivered a billion-dollar blockbuster, reflecting stronger competition across the industry.

Universal’s The Odyssey is also closing in on the milestone after earning approximately $912 million worldwide, while Warner Bros.’ Dune: Part Three and Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday are widely expected by analysts to join the list before the end of the year.

The diverse lineup also stands out because it extends beyond traditional superhero franchises. Alongside comic book adaptations and animated sequels, Michael, a musical biopic, has demonstrated that audiences continue to support different genres on the big screen.

Industry analysts say the box office resurgence is being fueled by growing demand for IMAX, Dolby Cinema, ScreenX, and 4DX screenings, which command higher ticket prices and have reported record sales this year.

At the same time, younger audiences continue to play a major role in theatrical success. Shawn Robbins, Director of Analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, told CNBC,

“The billion-dollar club has always been treated as a special box office milestone. It’s also one that’s become more challenging to achieve since the pandemic.”

He added,

“The sheer number of films crossing this threshold can be a good indicator of a banner year.”

Mike Polydoros, CEO of cinema marketing firm PaperAirplane Media, also pointed to younger moviegoers as a key factor behind the industry’s recovery, saying,

“The demise of the theatrical experience has once again been greatly exaggerated.”

He noted that Gen Z accounted for 49% of Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s opening-day audience and 30% of The Odyssey’s opening-day crowd.

According to industry data cited by CNBC, premium-format tickets now account for a growing share of admissions, while annual domestic box office revenue is on pace to surpass $10 billion for the first time since 2019. International markets have also remained crucial, with more than half of the revenue earned by this year’s billion-dollar films coming from outside the U.S. and Canada.
