Sony Pictures is reportedly moving closer to acquiring the highly anticipated Battlefield movie adaptation, bringing together Michael B. Jordan and Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie for a major video game-to-film project.

Sony has emerged as the frontrunner to secure the movie after several major studios and streaming platforms previously showed interest. The project is based on Electronic Arts’ long-running military shooter franchise, which has grown from its 2002 debut into one of the industry’s biggest first-person shooter properties.

Michael B. Jordan Could Lead the Battlefield Movie

Jordan is attached to produce the Battlefield film through his production company and could also take on the lead role, although his casting is not yet confirmed. The project would add another major action franchise to Jordan’s growing list of Hollywood projects following his work in Creed and Sinners.

The actor’s involvement also gives the adaptation a prominent Hollywood star while allowing him to contribute creatively behind the camera.

Sony’s reported interest follows a broader bidding battle for the Battlefield movie. Several major studios and streamers reportedly pursued the project before Sony emerged as the current frontrunner.

Christopher McQuarrie is set to write, direct and produce the adaptation. The filmmaker is best known for his extensive collaboration with Tom Cruise on the Mission: Impossible franchise, as well as his work on Top Gun: Maverick.

His involvement could make the Battlefield adaptation particularly notable for its potential large-scale military action. However, specific plot details, the setting and additional casting have not yet been revealed.

The franchise began with Battlefield 1942 in 2002 and has since explored multiple historical and futuristic conflicts. The latest major entry, Battlefield 6, continued the series’ modern military focus and became its biggest-selling game.

The film will also enter a competitive market for military video game adaptations. Paramount is developing a Call of Duty movie with Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg, with the project set in the Modern Warfare universe.

For now, Sony’s reported negotiations mark the latest major step toward bringing Battlefield to theaters.
