S. S. Rajamouli’s RRR is one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious productions, combining spectacular action, historical fiction, and breathtaking visuals. Starring N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt, and Ajay Devgn, the Oscar-winning blockbuster follows fictionalized versions of revolutionaries Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju. To match its grand scale, the filmmakers traveled across multiple countries while constructing enormous custom-built sets that recreated British-era India.
Although RRR is set primarily in pre-independence India, much of the film was shot in Hyderabad, with additional sequences filmed across Gujarat, Bulgaria, and Ukraine. Where RRR Was Filmed
The heart of RRR’s production was Hyderabad, Telangana, where filming took place over several years. Many of the film’s largest sets were built inside Ramoji Film City, including a massive recreation of early 20th-century Delhi used for several action sequences. Production designer Sabu Cyril also constructed elaborate village sets in Gandipet and converted an aluminum factory in Hyderabad into a large-scale action set for the movie’s opening schedules.
Outside Hyderabad, the production traveled across India to capture additional locations. Important scenes were filmed in Vadodara, Gujarat, while portions of the movie were also shot in Siddhpur, whose preserved architecture suited the film’s colonial-era setting. Some planned filming in Pune, Maharashtra, was postponed because of injuries sustained during production, leading the schedule to be adjusted.
Several international locations also played a major role in RRR. A significant portion of Jr. NTR’s jungle sequences was filmed in Bulgaria, using forests around Sofia alongside studio work enhanced with visual effects. Meanwhile, the Oscar-winning song “Naatu Naatu” was filmed outside the Mariinskyi Palace in Kyiv, Ukraine, with additional scenes shot at Mezhyhirya Park and Victoria Film Studios in the Kyiv region. Ukraine was chosen partly because it provided the ideal location and access to a large group of international dancers during production.
Rather than relying entirely on computer-generated imagery, Rajamouli’s team combined practical locations with enormous handcrafted sets to create RRR’s epic scale.
