The Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, one of Asia’s leading showcases for genre cinema, has officially dropped the international competition lineup for its milestone 30th edition. Set to run from July 2 to July 12 in Bucheon, South Korea, this year’s festival brings together 11 films from across the globe, highlighting horror, fantasy, and experimental storytelling.

Among the most talked-about selections are Obsession and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, both of which have already made waves on the global festival circuit.

A Major Lineup for a Landmark Edition

BIFAN’s main competition, now rebranded as “Bucheon Choice: World Features,” serves as the centerpiece of the festival. The section will determine the event’s top honor, the “Best of Bucheon” award.

Founded in 1997, the festival has grown into a major platform for genre filmmakers, and this year’s lineup reflects its continued focus on bold, unconventional storytelling. The 2026 selection features films from countries including Japan, Spain, Ireland, Finland, Australia, and the Philippines.

This international mix reinforces BIFAN’s reputation as a global hub for emerging voices and innovative cinema.

A still from Obsession

‘Obsession’ and ‘Camp Miasma’ Lead the Highlights

One of the standout entries is Obsession, directed by Curry Barker. The psychological horror film gained attention after its Toronto premiere and has since become an unexpected box office success. The story explores how forbidden desire spirals into supernatural terror, blending emotional drama with genre elements.

Also drawing significant interest is Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, directed by Jane Schoenbrun. The film debuted at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section and reimagines the classic summer camp slasher through a modern, queer lens.

These two titles represent the festival’s focus on films that push genre boundaries while engaging with contemporary themes.

Strong Presence From Global Film Festivals

The lineup includes several films that have already gained recognition at major international festivals. Titles from Cannes and Sundance feature prominently, including Species by Marion Le Coroller and Burn by Makoto Nagahisa.

Another notable entry is Leviticus, directed by Adrian Chiarella, which combines elements of queer romance and horror within a religious framework.

These selections highlight BIFAN’s role as a continuation of the global festival circuit, bringing together acclaimed works for a broader audience.

New Premieres and Star-Driven Projects

In addition to festival favorites, BIFAN 2026 will host premieres of new films, including Cursed Meme by Kan Yamamoto and NIKO, a Korea-Taiwan co-production starring Tiffany Young.

The lineup also features Nightborn, directed by Hanna Bergholm, which stars Rupert Grint in a folk-horror story centered on motherhood and transformation.

These additions bring a mix of star power and fresh storytelling, adding to the diversity of the competition.

A Focus on Genre and Representation

A notable aspect of this year’s lineup is its emphasis on diverse perspectives, particularly within queer cinema. Several films explore identity, relationships, and social themes through the lens of horror and fantasy.

This thematic focus aligns with broader trends in global cinema, where genre films are increasingly used to address complex cultural and emotional topics.

By showcasing these stories, BIFAN continues to position itself as a platform for films that challenge traditional narratives.
