Marvel fans may want to revisit Avengers: Endgame before Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters. Joe Russo, who is directing the upcoming MCU blockbuster alongside his brother Anthony Russo, has described watching the 2019 film again as “required” viewing for audiences who want to fully understand the next chapter.

Speaking to Fandango, Russo explained that the upcoming Avengers: Endgame Encore theatrical release will provide a clearer narrative connection between the two films. Russo said,

“There’s a natural progression from Endgame into Doomsday.”

How Endgame Encore Connects to Doomsday

Joe Russo added that Endgame Encore will

“connect the story of the two movies,”

while also incorporating the wider stories that have developed across the MCU since the Infinity Saga concluded.

“I think it’s required viewing for following the story in Doomsday,”

Russo said. Anthony Russo also teased new revelations by adding,

“If you saw Endgame when it was originally released, you couldn’t see this coming.”

Avengers: Endgame Encore returns to theaters on September 25 with approximately four minutes of additional footage and an exclusive look at Avengers: Doomsday. The re-release will run for about 185 minutes.

Avengers: Doomsday will arrive in theaters on December 18, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom. The film will unite major characters from the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and other corners of the Marvel universe.

The film’s massive ensemble includes Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, and many more. The Russo Brothers’ comments suggest that Endgame Encore may offer important clues about how Marvel’s next major crossover will continue the story.
